NutriKiwi Comparative Nutrition Claim - Vitamin C
NutriKiwi pre-packaged fruit makes a labelling comparative nutrition claim that green kiwifruit contains twice the Vitamin C of oranges - based on ‘per serve’ information.
The comparative nutrition claim is an approximation based on serve size, rather than per 100g - as actual serve size weight will fluctuate due to variable kiwifruit and orange sizes marketed to consumers.
This comparative nutrition claim is validated using the following references:

(1) A comparative claim about a food (claimed food) must include together with the claim: ; and
(2) In this section, a nutrition content claim is a comparative claim if:
(a) it:
(i) directly or indirectly compares the nutrition content of one food orbrand of food with another; and
(ii) includes claims using any of the following descriptors:(A) light or lite;
(B) increased;
(C) reduced;
(D) words of similar import; orThe NutriKiwi comparative nutrition claim complies with Section 1.2.7 as defined below

(b) The difference between the amount of the property of food (Vitamin C) in the claimed food (kiwifruit) and the reference food (orange) is “2 X” (two times)
3. Standard serve size – fruit
Nutrition Australia advises that the average standard serve of fruit equates to approximately 150g of a fruit - or approximately 1 medium orange or 2 small kiwifruit.
Serve size will vary based on the actual size ranges of fruit within these classifications
(a) the identity of the *reference food
(b) the difference between the amount of the *property of food in the claimed food and the reference food.
4. Comparison of Vitamin C content by serve
Citrus Australia nutritional information based on serve size is presented in the table below*. Citrus Australia define the Vitamin C content of an orange at 62mg per serve.
NutriKiwi nutritional information on green kiwifruit based on a serve size of 2 kiwifruit, Vitamin C content is 127.7mg/serve. Note: Serving Size will be defined as 150g (approximately 2 kiwifruit) on NIP.
5. Comparative nutrition claim justification
NutriKiwi will market green kiwifruit in the packaging that are at the higher weight range for what are considered small kiwifruit sizes, between 72 – 95g weight per piece of fruit.
The serve size of 2 pieces will range in weight from 144-190g.
The average serve weight will be 167g. Therefore, the average Vitamin C content of a serve size of 2 kiwifruit pieces will be 141.95mg. This is more than double the Vitamin C content of a medium size orange.
The Nutrition Information Panel of an 8 piece pack will include:

An asterisk will be added after the word “orange*” on the label carrying the comparative nutritional claim with the asterisk indicating to text that the comparative nutritional claim is based on “*per serve”.
The words “orange*” and “*per serve” should appear on the same packaging panel.
